Ask Yourself:
Why now?
What is your idea for a book project?
What writing or manuscript assembly has been completed?
Who is your audience, your reader?
What is your budget?
Are you able to self-promote, go public as a speaker, or do public readings from your book?
What do you hope will be the outcome of publishing your book?
What are the advantages or disadvantages to print-on-demand, e-book, or paper publication?
You may be feeling the pressure of getting older, or of not having put your best work out there yet. You may realize that waiting to be "discovered" or finding a large commercial publisher to publish and promote your book may be unrealistic. You may have a legacy work, something that needs and wants to be shared with family, friends, or a certain group or population, and realize this is the best time to go forward. There are many reasons for publishing, some not so noble, but for those with something genuine to say, there is no time like the present to get your work into the viable form that a book provides.
Sugartown Publishing has a unique niche working with small and independently minded writers with their assets of curiosity, originality, and even quirky or eccentric ideas. Mainstream and larger publishers tend to ignore topics that they do not think will appeal too a large market, and therefore many valid books never get made. Never take your idea lightly. If you believe in it, it is worthy of placing into production. We are open to hearing your ideas. . . .
What writing or manuscript assembly has been completed?
Before you move too far into formatting a Word document or adding photographs or charts, take a moment to think about the consequences of putting the cart before the horse. A well-written text is or should be your starting point, even when the book relies heavily on imagery. Don't let yourself get carried away "designing" a book that may have to be re-done by a professional designer working with the right technology to create a professional product. Talk to us first. But talk to us after you are sure you have a completed draft of your manuscript, or are well on your way to its final assembly.
Every book is a communication. Between minds, hearts, souls, and, quite literally, between bodies: the writer's hand and brain to the reader's eyes and brain. It's a very important exchange and one of the most satisfying experiences to be a writer who has found a reader, or a reader who has found a soul-mate in a writer.
Take the very important time to really think about what you offer and who needs or would want to hear what that may be. There is a story for everyone and a story that will speak to only a few, but all stories are about connection and enriching lives.
Producing and printing and publishing a book are not the cheapest things to do, but there has never been a time when it was so accessible to ordinary people, not just the rich and narcissistic!
If you have bought any large applicance or automobile, things that have a relatively short life-span, you have spent much more than the cost of putting out a book.
That said, you can expect to spend between $1,000 to $5,000 dollars, depending on the specifications of your book, the quality your hope to reach, and the quantity you wish to print.
Many online book publishing services promise very low price-per-piece rates but they rarely explain the breakdown and add-on expenses. Sugartown Publishing prides itself on being up-front in estimating what your job will cost, and you will be surprised what value you will receive for a very reasonable rate.
Why not just stick with writing your blog or use a print-on-demand or e-book service?
There are good reasons and bad reasons behind every choice we make so it really comes down to what you wish to accomplish short and long-term. We happen to be of the opinion that there is nothing comparable to holding a physical, three-dimensional book, that does not require batteries or a plug.
However you wish to place your book into a reader's hands, the most important thing is to make a book a reader will find attractive, informative, entertaining, meaningful and pleasurable. We are committed to making that happen for your book, within a reasonable budget. We also go beyond most print-on-demand or e-book marketers in supporting your project AFTER the book has come out.
You can print one book at a time and you will pay a higher price per book. We have seen authors run out far in advance of what they expected in doing a short press run, making it difficult to get the book out for promotional or fulfillment purposes.
